Hearing Protection Fit Testing

Ensure Employees Receive Proper Noise Reduction and Meet OSHA Requirements

Hearing protection fit testing verifies how effectively an employee’s earplugs or earmuffs reduce noise for their unique ears. Using the WAHTS system, this test measures the employee’s actual noise reduction—helping employers confirm proper protection and meet Hearing Conservation Program requirements.

What Is Hearing Protection Fit Testing?

Hearing protection fit testing evaluates whether an employee’s earplugs provide sufficient noise reduction in real-world conditions. The WAHTS system measures each worker’s personal attenuation rating (PAR) to ensure they receive the level of protection necessary for their noise exposure.

This test helps prevent noise-induced hearing loss, improves compliance, and ensures that workers are using the right type and size of hearing protection.

Who Needs This Test?

Hearing protection fit testing is recommended for employees who:

  • Work in high noise environments

  • Are part of a Hearing Conservation Program

  • Use earplugs at work

  • Have experienced difficulty with comfort, insertion, or effective use of hearing protection

  • Work in manufacturing, construction, warehousing, maintenance, or other noisy operations

It is highly valuable for new hires, workers with threshold shifts, and employees exposed to noise levels at or above OSHA limits.

How It Works

  1. Hearing protection fit testing with the WAHTS system is fast, accurate, and requires no sound booth or quiet room:

    1. The employee dons their earplugs (this test is unavailable for earmuffs)

    2. The WAHTS device runs a simple listening test.

    3. The system calculates the employee’s personal attenuation rating (PAR).

    4. Results show whether their hearing protection is adequate—or if a different size or style is needed.

Testing can be performed anywhere on-site or at our OccuMed facility.

Applicable Standards:

Our testing supports and complies with:

  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 – Occupational Noise Exposure

  • Hearing Conservation Program requirements

  • ANSI/ASA standards for hearing protector fit testing (optional but strongly recommended)
