Respirator Fit Testing
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employees who work in a hazardous environment (environments with harmful dusts, fumes, gases, etc.) to wear respirators. These respirators protect the wearer against toxic atmospheres, allowing them to breathe with reduced exposure to respirable toxins. However for yours or your employees’ respirators to be most effective, a Respirator Fit Test is necessary to ensure proper fit and function while in use.
A Fit Test tests the seal between the respirator’s face piece and your face. This ensures the effectiveness of the respirator. Fit testing is not only required by OSHA, but keeps your employees safe from contaminants produced in their work environment. The respirators only work if the intended protection is verified. Using state-of-the-art machinery, PortaCount, OccuMed can perform Quantitative Fit Testing to ensure your respirator fits properly and is effective. It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes to complete the test and should be performed at least annually.
When you are scheduled for your fit test, there are some guidelines to keep in mind and some rules you or your employees will need to follow:
