Spirometry (Lung Function Testing)
Evaluate Lung Health and Ensure Respirator Readiness
Spirometry is a fast, reliable test that measures how well an employee’s lungs are functioning. It is commonly used as part of respiratory protection programs, medical evaluations, and for workers exposed to dust, fumes, chemicals, or other airborne hazards.
What Is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a diagnostic breathing test that assesses lung capacity and airflow. By measuring how much and how quickly an employee can exhale, spirometry helps identify early signs of lung impairment or respiratory issues.
This test supports compliance, improves workplace safety, and helps determine whether an employee is medically able to safely wear a respirator or perform certain job tasks.
Who Needs This Test?
Spirometry is recommended or required for employees who:
Work around dust, fumes, smoke, or chemical vapors
Participate in a respiratory protection program
Are exposed to airborne contaminants
Use respirators at work
Work in environments that may affect lung health
Common industries include manufacturing, construction, healthcare, environmental services, food processing, laboratories, and chemical operations.
How It Works
-
Spirometry testing is quick, noninvasive, and follows standardized procedures:
-
The employee breathes into a handheld spirometer.
-
The device measures lung volume, airflow rate, and breathing patterns.
-
A trained technician evaluates the results for signs of respiratory limitations.
-
Findings help determine whether the employee is medically cleared to wear a respirator or perform certain duties.
Testing is available on-site at your workplace or at our OccuMed facility.
-
Applicable Standards:
Our spirometry testing adheres to:
-
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 – Medical evaluation requirements under the Respiratory Protection Standard
-
NIOSH recommendations for assessing lung function in workers exposed to respiratory hazards
