Course Description:
OSHA requires employees that are designated as users of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to have initial training as well as to be certified annually. This course will take the trainee through the fundamental principles of respiratory protection and the basic workings of the air pacl to safely operating in an IDLH atmosphere. The course covers proper timed donning techniques, low profile, full escape, entanglement, and other emergency procedures.
Upon completion of this course, the participants will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the SCBA by obtaining a minimum score of 80 percent on the written examination and also by a satisfactory completion of a practical exercise as per this lesson material.
Course Topics:
Describe the OSHA training requirements for the type, uses, and limitations of respiratory protection (APR, PAPR, and SCBA)
Identify the capabilities and limitations of the SCBA, including its assigned protection factor
Identify the purpose of the SCBA
Recognize the requirements workers must meet before wearing a SCBA
Recognize the inspection steps that must be completed to ensure operability of the SCBA prior to its use
Identify the different parts of the SCBA (Facepiece, Regulator and Tank)
Describe how to inspect the SCBA, Facepiece, and Tank
Describe the operation of the SCBA
Describe the emergency procedures for the SCBA
Demonstrate don and doffing of the PPE and SCBA
Demonstrate, through a practical exercise, the proper procedural functions of the SCBA to include: components; donning procedure and use; emergency procedures; removal procedure; changing cylinders; changing cylinders in a toxic environment (Licensed Operations Personnel only)
Apply appropriate human error reduction tools
